How To Create The Best Proposal for Review
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES | PURCHASE
Publishers prefer to review a book proposal instead of an entire book manuscript. Based on feedback from ECPA member publishers and book proposal experts, we have prepared an easy-to-use 12-question proposal form to help you create a professional book proposal in a format publishers prefer. The proposal will include your book’s title, summary, pitch line, chapter headings, and writing sample. You will also identify your target market, comparable works, promotional goals, and genre.

Proposal Tips
- The proposal form utilizes pre-formatted font and font size.
- You can either type your proposal into the provided space or copy and paste your work from a Word document.
- No images may be attached to the proposal.
- There is no need to enhance colors or fonts as this does not appear to the publishers.
- Save your work frequently to ensure your session does not “time out” and cause loss of information.
- You will have the opportunity to review and edit your proposal in its site-finished format before submitting it to publishers.
- You will have the option to allow agents to contact you about your proposal.
- This service automatically puts your proposal in front of royalty-based publishers. However, you will have the option to allow self or independent publishers to contact you about your proposal. (See publishing options.)
Your proposal is your first and only impression—take your time in preparing your submission. Check your grammar and spelling. Have others read your work to assist you in the editing process. The investment in constructing a well-crafted proposal will be one of the most valuable things you can do for your book.
